1638 Willem Blaeu Map of Bermuda - ORIGINAL
Mappa Aestivarum Insularum, alias Barmudas
This dramatic 1638 map centers on Bermuda and provides both a contextual and detailed impression of the island. The background of is a geographically accurate map of the Atlantic Ocean, with a tiny Bermuda appearing at the very center and the coasts of Virginia, New England, and Hispaniola in the corners. Occupying most of this empty ocean space is a superimposed enlargement of the island, magnified to show lots within the territories of tribes and parishes, as well as the most important forts, churches, and coastal features. Lots are assigned to landowners according to a key running along the bottom of the map, a level of detail that likely owes to the map's basis in the surveys of Richard Norwood, an English mathematician who had taken up permanent residence on the island. The key is flanked on the left by the Virginia Company seal and on the right by the seal of Bermuda. Most impressive, however, is the cartouche at the center of the map which seems to emanate out of the tiny geographical island bel

Blaeu and his family worked out of Amsterdam and was instrumental in driving this dominance in his lifetime, and this legacy was continued by his sons.
